Okay, I'm not (yet) a Mac-user but I might buy the new MacBook Pro 13 inch with retina screen. Since I've heard there's been major issues with the game when it's played on a Mac, I'd like to ask you about the most recent experience. I've read quite a few threads about similar subjects, but they've been kind of old.
Here's the specs for the rMBP I'd like to purchase:
    2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics

The 13' has integrated graphics. The 15' or iMac will perform better because they have dedicated, more powerful graphics.
Anyone (preferably with this or similar specs) that has experienced any issues with the game?

TS3 is not written natively for Macs so you will notice a drop in performance. The latest patch, 1.63, has made significant improvements for a lot of Mac users but ultimately EA did an appalling job for Mac users because they used a program called Cider to emulate the Windows environment for the game. EG - the game is a massive resource hog so needs a lot of RAM. Windows users (or those who play in Windows on their Macs using Boot Camp) have a limit of 4Gb RAM, us Mac users are limited to 2Gb RAM, hence the frequent crashes that Mac users report.
Also I have another question, but it might not really fit in this forum. I have all my games on discs, but since I can't play them on an rMBP without using an external CD/DVD drive, I'd like to play via Origin. If I borrow my friend's, install the games I already own and then download the latest EP, will I be able to play without any CDs?

    Yes

Thanks a lot for a great answer.
Since my last computer broke (on which I played with maxed settings) I've been forced to play on an Acer with Intel HD 4000. I was able to push it to medium with a few on high (of course too many on high made it lag). Since Intel Iris Graphics is newer and better, could I at least reach medium settings on an rMBP?

You should be able to. The graphics are still integrated, not dedicated which is the important factor.

Yes, I understand the difference. I just thought that if the integrated Intel 4000 made it to medium, then Intel Iris should as well.

You can't compare a Windows machine and a Mac. Apple design the hardware and software. A Windows machine is made by Sony/Dell/Acer etc. to run a 3rd party OS, Windows. That's why Macs are so stable and fast

Vaniljblomma, if you go through with the purchase, could you please post some pics and report back on how the game is playing in this thread? I'm considering the exact same purchase as you (same specs and all) so I'm very curious as to how the game plays. If you could also let me know which EPs/SPs/how much store content/CC you have, and what settings you're playing on, and whether you're playing through OS X or Windows, that'd be great. It's quite hard to find this information anywhere regarding the Sims 3 specifically!
Good luck with your purchase if you go through with it, hope to hear from you.

Because no 2 people seem to have the same Simming experience unfortunately. The OP might be able to play great whilst your game might not even open, or vice versa. All on the exact same model Mac. One of you may have conflicting software which is causing the problem. Or have had other applications open which are causing memory leaks. There are infinite possibilities.

Hi @bluebellflora wondering if you can help me. I have the maxed out late 2013 15' rmbp and whenever I try to play the Sims 3 it switches to the dGPU as expected but the fans go off immediately and are very, very loud. The computer isn't hot or even warm but the fans are running at high intensity anyway to stop this?

Have you tried resetting the PRAM?

You could try resetting the SMC too:

If it still does it then go to your nearest Genius Bar and have them check it out

Sure, I can agree with that, but I'm still interested in garnering some general information as to how it runs. Even if it doesn't run the same for everyone, a report of one user's experience is better than no reports at all!

    Hello!
I've tested The Sims 3 on the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (2.4GHz/8GB/256GB).
The game is perfectly playable on medium-high settings at 1280x800. I have only Seasons installed. While in Edit Town mode, the game did maintain around 35-40fps, which to me looked very fluid. Build/Buy mode maintained around 45-53fps, which is still excellent. Live mode, however, did drop frame rates to around 20-30fps. It still looked pretty good to me. While snowing, It still maintained around 23fps. No sign of severe lag or choppiness.
I would recommend NOT setting the game at the full native 2560x1600 resolution. When I tested this in Edit Town mode, I got as low as 7fps at one point because of this. I'd recommend keeping the game at medium-high settings at either 1280x800 or 1440x900. I did test the game also in 1440x900. The difference in terms of 'frames per second' were not significant. It's still perfectly playable on this resolution, but I wouldn't recommend going any higher. It looks perfectly fine too!
When gaming, the fans do kick on, you will hear them. They are not as loud as my Late 2011 15-inch. I did not experience any overheating issues with this. The laptop ran relatively cool, and the fans were quiet.
From my overall experience, the game ran perfectly fine. You'll love your new MacBook Pro! Go for it!
    Adam.

So i installed the game no problem. Faster than ever.
I notice the graphics are TERRIBLE, and go to adjust them. By default all the graphics will be set to the lowest.
After I'm done adjusting them, and click the check mark, the whole screen goes wonky. I don't understand.
It's frustrating that this is happening, as so many people will be buying these new macs and will not be able to play sims on them... EA may lose a lot of credibility here.
Suggestions? Help? Would loovvee to play haha.

Hi! I have the 15' macbook pro retina, and I use to have a lot of problems as well. First, play in window mode (not full screen) and make sure that the graphics aren't up all the way! (I can use medium settings for mine) Make sure all your applications are closed, even the internet and your mail. Make sure that you actually quit them and not just close the window. I also use this free application from the app store called Memory Clean. It helps clean out your ram. After you close all your applications, Open it, click 'Clean Memory', wait for it to get to 100% and then quit and you can start playing the Sims. Hope it helps!
