Nov 21, 2013  Octagon is a minimal arcade game where you have to move fast or be left behind. As the floor moves beneath you, spin your world around to dodge speed bumps. Flip upside-down to avoid holes, surf on top of the Octagon—whatever you can do to survive.

Octagon (fully titled Octagon – A Minimal Arcade Game with Maximum Challenge) is a minimalist twitch-reflex video game by Lukas Korba.^[1] It costs $1.99 on the Apple App Store.^[2]

Gameplay[edit]

Octagon tasks the player with controlling an octagon in an octagonal world without falling off.^[3] There are an infinite number of levels player can play in with the goal of completing the level with out falling off.^[4][3] These levels increase in complexity as the player completes levels.^[5] The game has 3 controls which the player must use to complete a level which are tapping or swiping left or right to move left or right and swiping upwards to clear vertical gaps.^[4]

There is also an endless mode where the player is tasked with the task of controlling the octagon for as long as possible before falling off.^[6]

Reception[edit]

Octagon received mixed reviews. Apple'N'Apps gave the game 3.0 out of 5, praising the game's 'great design work,' 'extreme challenge from the outset,' and 'intuitive controls,' while criticizing the lack of variety, the fact that the 'controls can cause mix-ups,' and the 'intrinsic repetition to complete levels.'^[5]

Games don't require stunning graphics to draw the attention of users, just a gameplay that turns out to be addictive and even hypnotic, as in the case of Octagon.

Addictive free game without adverts or any other annoyances.

Octagon puts you inside an octagonal tunnel in which your reflexes are put to the test. The game is very fast-paced, there's no time to think or come up with any sort of strategy. You just have enough time to move forwards and do the best you can.

A classic arcade game

Octagon's gameplay consists in managing to advance as much as possible along the tunnel that we're travelling through. The difficulty lies in the fact that many of the surfaces disappear or we have to dodge obstacles that spring up all of a sudden.
